Weather radios have now become an even more valuable tool for alerting you to emergency events!

The National Weather Service and Homeland Security announced that effective June 30, 2004 NOAA Weather Radio would carry event warning codes not only for weather alerts but for a variety of civil, non-weather events.

The comprehensive message warnings will include such events as child abduction, 911 telephone outages, nuclear power plant warnings, immediate evacuation and bio-chemical hazard warnings and more.

The EAS (Event Warning System) will immediately activate when an event warning is issued. Until that time, the weather radio will operate in "stand-by mode" and activate when a warning is issued.

Many weather alert radios now feature S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) technology, allowing you to localize emergency warnings to your specific area. The EAS will operate in tandem with S.A.M.E. while owners of older weather radios that do not have the advanced feature could be missing valuable alert information.
